Atopia lance sa division de distribution avec lancement du film A SILENT LOVE de Federico Hidalgo au Canada et aux États-Unis
Montréal, le 24 août 2004 - Atopia inaugurera sa nouvelle division de distribution à l'occasion de la sortie de A SILENT LOVE, premier long métrage et film primé de Federico Hidalgo, au Canada et aux Etats-Unis, à l'automne 2004.
L’objectif d'Atopia est d'acquérir et de distribuer des films indépendants au Canada et aux Etats-Unis. Se consacrant au départ à la distribution de films produits par Atopia, la nouvelle division orientera ensuite ses activités vers l'acquisition de films étrangers, dès le début de 2005, pour se spécialiser dans le cinéma de l'Amérique latine. Selon l'échéancier prévu, la division commencera également à acquérir des scénarios de films canadiens au printemps 2005. Atopia cherche actuellement à s'associer à d'importants distributeurs vidéo du Canada et des Etats-Unis pour accéder au marché du DVD qui est en plein essor.
Le fondateur d'Atopia, Pascal Maeder, est le producteur des films Entre la Lune et Montevideo (1999) et SPIT: Squeegee Punks In Traffic (2001). Depuis la fondation d'Atopia, en 2000, il a entre autre produit El Ring (2002), A Silent Love (2003) et Jimmywork (2004).
Depuis sa première au Festival Sundance, en janvier 2004, A SILENT LOVE a récolté de nombreuses récompenses, dont les prix du meilleur scénario au Festival des films latins de Miami et au Festival international du film de Brooklyn, tandis qu'une de ses interprètes, Susana Salazar, voyait sa performance exceptionnelle soulignée par le Festival des films latins de Miami. A SILENT LOVE met en vedette Vanessa Bauche (Amores Perros), Noel Burton et Susana Salazar.
Joëlle Medina dirigera la nouvelle division de distribution. Après avoir travaillé pour Alliance Releasing, à Toronto, où elle a coordonné le marketing, la publicité et la promotion de divers films comme La Vie est belle et Shakespeare in Love, elle s’est établit à Montréal pour devenir directrice du marketing et du développement à Remstar. C'est à elle que l'on doit les campagnes de marketing canadienne et américaine pour le controversé film français Baise-moi.
La première de la plus récente production d'Atopia, JIMMYWORK, aura lieu dans le cadre de l'édition 2004 du Festival international du film de Toronto. Écrit et réalisé par Simon Sauvé, JIMMYWORK est une oeuvre électrisante tenant à la fois du film noir et du cinéma vérité. Parmi les films devant être produits l'année prochaine, mentionnons le deuxième long métrage de Federico Hidalgo, Imitation, une comédie dramatique se déroulant à Montréal, de même que The African Dream, le tout dernier projet d'Attila Bertalan, dont l'action se situe en Afrique.

La première canadienne du film A Silent Love sera au Festival des films du monde suivi d’une sortie commerciale au Canada et aux États-Unis
Montréal, le 10 août 2004 - Atopia est heureuse d’annoncer que A Silent Love de Federico Hidalgo poursuivra une brillante carrière par une projection au Festival des films du monde 2004 de Montréal. Le film sortira ensuite dans les cinémas canadiens à Montréal, le 10 septembre 2004, puis à Vancouver, le 17, et à Toronto, le 24, avant d’entreprendre une tournée canadienne via le Film Circuit cet automne. A Silent Love fera ses débuts américains au prestigieux Quad Cinema de New York, le 15 octobre 2004, suivi de sorties en salles à Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago et Miami.
Mettant en vedette Vanessa Bauche (Amores Perros) qui "pétille d’intelligence et rayonne d’une énergie chaleureuse" [Variety], A Silent Love est un triangle amoureux tragico-comique dont l’action se partage entre Montréal et Mexico. Le scénario du film a été couronné à deux reprises : au Festival international du film de Brooklyn et au Festival des films latins de Miami, où Susana Salazar, une véritable révélation, a mérité une mention spéciale pour son exceptionnelle performance. A Silent Love s’est également attiré les éloges du public et de la critique lors de certains des plus prestigieux festivals cinématographiques et événements mondiaux, comme le Festival de Sundance 2004, la Muestra de Cine de Guadalajara et une présentation de nouveaux films canadiens au Museum of Modern Art (Canadian Front 2004). Premier long métrage de Hidalgo, un scénariste et réalisateur argentino-canadien, A Silent Love est produit par Pascal Maeder. Messieurs Hidalgo et Maeder, de même que les actrices Vanessa Bauche et Susana Salazar, seront présents au Festival des films du monde de Montréal pour la promotion du film.
Norman (Noel Burton), un timide professeur d’un certain âge vit à Montréal. Il rencontre Gladys, une belle et fougueuse mexicaine (Bauche), grâce à une agence de rencontre fonctionnant sur Internet. Plein d’espoir, Norman s’envole pour Mexico afin de demander à Gladys de l’épouser et de déménager à Montréal. Elle accepte, mais à condition que sa mère Fernanda (Salazar), qui est veuve, les accompagne. Norman accepte de bon coeur, ignorant tout des passions qui vont bientôt se déchaîner. Des sentiments et désirs inattendus agitent Norman, Gladys et Fernanda, puis culminent dans un moment de confrontation rempli d’émotions.
La division de production d’Atopia a été fondée en 2000 et l’entreprise s’est récemment lancée dans la distribution sur les marchés canadien et américain. Federico Hidalgo’s Award-Winning A Silent Love at the 2004 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival
Montreal, July 7, 2004 - Atopia is pleased to announce that A SILENT LOVE by Federico Hidalgo has been officially selected as part of the 2004 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF).
Starring Vanessa Bauche (Amores Perros) who “radiates a crackling intelligence and south-of-the-border spunk” [Variety], A SILENT LOVE is a love-triangle comic drama that unfolds both in Montreal and Mexico. The film has won two Best Screenplay awards, at the Brooklyn International Film Festival and the Miami Latin Film Festival, where Mexican discovery Susana Salazar picked up an Honorable Mention for her outstanding performance: “Susana Salazar basks gloriously in one of those rare roles that allows an actress of "a certain age" to seem funny, sexy, vital…” [Variety] A SILENT LOVE has also garnered public and critical acclaim at some of the world's most prestigious film festivals, including Sundance 2004, the Guadalajara Muestra de Cine, and the Museum of Modern Art’s New Canadian Film Showcase. A SILENT LOVE is a first feature by Argentine-Canadian writer/director Federico Hidalgo and is produced by Pascal Maeder. Bauche, Hidalgo, and Maeder will attend the 2004 Latino International Film Festival to promote the film. Theatrical release in the US and Canada is scheduled for Fall 2004.
Noel Burton plays Norman, a shy, middle-aged teacher from Montreal who meets Gladys, a beautiful, impulsive Mexican woman (Bauche), through the services of an Internet agency. Full of hope, Norman flies off to Mexico to ask Gladys to marry him and move to Montreal. Gladys agrees on one condition, that her widowed mother, Fernanda (Salazar) comes along. Norman readily agrees, unaware of the romantic sparks that are about to fly. Unexpected feelings and desires between Norman, Gladys and Fernanda heat up and culminate in an emotional showdown.
Atopia’s production branch was founded four years ago and the company recently expanded its operations to domestic distribution. World Premiere of A Silent Love at 2004 Sundance Film Festival
Montreal, December 2, 2003 - Atopia is pleased to announce that A SILENT LOVE by Federico Hidalgo has been officially selected as part of the World Cinema programme of the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. Starring Vanessa Bauche (Amores Perros), this love-triangle comic drama unfolds both in Montreal and Mexico. A SILENT LOVE is a first feature by Argentine-Canadian writer/director Federico Hidalgo and is produced by Pascal Maeder. Bauche, Hidalgo and Maeder will attend the 2004 Sundance Film Festival to promote the film and to secure sales and distribution deals for US and international territories.

Atopia is currently developing several projects with Canadian filmmakers including Federico Hidalgo’s next film. The Montreal-based company most recently produced the feature-length documentary SPIT: Squeegee Punks in Traffic, which was released to wide critical and public acclaim across Canada.
Canadian broadcasting rights have been licensed to The Movie Network, Movie Central and Showcase. The production was financed by Telefilm Canada, SODEC (Québec) and The Harold Greenberg Fund. The film was shot on location in Montreal, Canada and in Toluca, Mexico.
In March 2004, A SILENT LOVE will continue its US festival tour with a special presentation at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
